Re: 36 mini books
Wed, June 9, 2004 - 1:12 PMthese are small books that fit in your hand
they only have 3 pages, very limiting
they will be created, aside from basic construction,
by a single author....1000journals are circulating colabrative journals with many pages and no unifing theme
although i love 1000 journals
i want this to be a piece that does not rely on numbers and chance so heavily.

Re: 36 mini books
Mon, June 28, 2004 - 6:25 PMNot a theme so much as maybe a delimiter. What each person chooses has to be a concrete as opposed to an abstract. Toothpicks, e.g.; I think I saw "lemons" + that would work. abstractions like love, death, justice would not. same principle as in writing; concrete always being better and enforcing a constraint often has the opposite effect, wild mind creativity, astounding outcome... -

Re: 36 mini books
Tue, June 29, 2004 - 8:47 AMI agree about constraints often spurring creativity. But it also strikes me that abstracts work better with visual art than in writing, since it's an interpretation of the abstract away from the constraints of word or even thought.
Still, I'll repeat my suggestions. Verbs are concrete, even if they aren't objects:
Count me in on the three-pg mini book idea-
word suggestions:
delphinium
salivate
trudge
alchemy
pince nez

Re: 36 mini books
Tue, June 29, 2004 - 6:58 PMI hear what you're saying and know what you mean, agree to some extent but... let's just for a second forget about the medium used to express whether it's words, curled paper, or reeds, what have you, put that aside just for the moment, right, and think about it --- love, fear, justice, etc, these big abstractions I think tend to make for trouble because they're so overdone so proliferate as to be uninspiring. (and kind of end up in likewise output) I think. the more precision in naming gets the associative-self (creativity) going; and then, too, the path has to bend around and twist around, find a new route or way of working with the named if that particular named is experienced as an obstacle, which can happen. For example, think "love" and what comes to mind? Think "aloe" or "jackhammer" and you do see something more clearly... -

Re: 36 mini books
Wed, June 30, 2004 - 6:55 PMI really like this mini book idea and would like to be included.
I also support the idea of a theme, or jumping-off point. A collective (or plural) noun would both be limiting and give a good-size playing field. Some ideas:
flocks
tribes (!)
library
collection
orchestra
climate
neighborhood
family
With or without a theme, it's still good.
